How TMS Therapy Works
What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive neurological treatment that uses precisely targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of the brain associated with depression.
Unlike medication, TMS does not enter the bloodstream. There are no systemic side effects. No sedation. No downtime. You sit comfortably during treatment and return immediately to your day.
TMS is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder and depression with anxious features. It is an established, evidence-based treatment with decades of clinical research behind it.
Advanced Technology.
Precise Results.
The Magstim System
Alamo Heights NeuroWellness uses the MagStim system, a leading TMS device trusted by clinicians worldwide for its precision and reliability.
MagStim delivers focused magnetic fields to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain most closely associated with mood regulation. The field strength is calibrated to each patient's individual threshold, ensuring every session is as effective as possible.
Two Protocols. One Goal.
We offer two TMS protocols to fit your schedule and clinical needs.
Your treating physician will recommend the protocol that best fits your clinical profile and lifestyle. Both are covered by TRICARE when prior authorization is obtained.

What to Expect During Treatment
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation with Dr. Fernandez. He will review your history, confirm your diagnosis and design your personalized treatment protocol.
Before your first TMS session, our team will identify your motor threshold — the calibration point unique to your brain that ensures every session is precisely targeted.
During each session, you sit comfortably while the MagStim coil is positioned against your scalp. You will feel a rhythmic tapping sensation. Most patients find it mild and entirely manageable. You are awake and fully alert throughout.
When the session ends, you leave. You drive yourself. You return to your day. No one needs to know you were here.
We Stay with You Throughout
Between TMS sessions, Dr. Fernandez offers telehealth follow-up appointments focused exclusively on your progress. These are brief, targeted check-ins to monitor your response and adjust your protocol if needed.
